5 ways our skin shows our internal health
acne
Just in case you didn’t know, skin is not just a protective organ. Not only does it helps us block out pests, regulate temperature, and help us interact with the world through touch, it’s actually a very large organ of elimination. Along with our kidneys/bladder, our colon, and our lungs, our skin excretes waste, especially if the other ones are backed up. (I.E. constipation, inadequate hydration, short and shallow breaths) Our liver takes excess hormones and other yucky stuff we don’t want and will push it out through our skin to eliminate it from our system. This results in the all-too-familiar zits, especially if you get hormonal acne around your period.
This can also be a sign that you’re eating stuff your body doesn’t like or has sensitivities to. Try eliminating some things from your diet, especially if they give you gas and bloating.
Psoriasis and Eczema
Both are big signs of internal inflammation, as mentioned above our skin is an organ of elimination and is highly connected to the liver. Oftentimes, when the liver is inflamed it’ll show up on the skin.
wrinkles and cellulite
Wrinkles and cellulite have a lot to do with the structural integrity of the skin, especially related to the connective tissue of the skin and the underlying muscles. These can be a sign that you either make that face a lot or that you might be deficient in things like collagen and vitamin C. Both of these essential nutrients help our body create our skin and connective tissue cells and give them resilience and integrity.
Dark Circles
Dark circles can be from many things, including lack of sleep, gut issues, infections, liver stress, genetics, and more. It helps to get more information about what other types of symptoms you’re having, including blood work and looking for signs of things like food allergies/sensitivities and yeast infections.
Unwanted Facial Hair
Now, any facial hair for us women can be triggering. Culturally, we spend a decent amount of money and time maintaining our smooth hairless look. But unwanted facial hair can be a sign that something more serious is going on. We all have peach fuzz, we are after all mammals. But when a woman starts getting thicker facial hair, especially the mustache/beard area it can be a sign that her androgens (testosterone, etc) are too high, which is a symptom of PCOS. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a cluster of symptoms that affect many women and cause all sorts of symptoms like facial hair, irregular periods, difficulty conceiving, weight gain, and more. This one is a complex issue that is best approached with the support of a person who is willing to take a deep look at your hormones and doesn’t just tell you to do things like “lose weight” (it’s a little hard to lose weight when you have a hormone imbalance problem that causes you to gain weight)
